1.0 INTRODUCTION:
FAISYN is a low cost, effective alternative to expensive commer-
cial filter synthesis packages. The program has been used
successfully to design countless lumped element filters and
diplexers from 10's of KHz to 1.5GHz and is the result of many
years experience in filter design. Many designers know that
filter design is often an iterative process. In the old days a
lot of tedious number grinding was required to arrive at an
optimal solution. FAISYN eases the burden by allowing the
designer to quickly synthesize a variety of circuits that can
be simulated and compared using your favorite circuit simulator
( FAISYN currently supports PSPICE-TM Microsim, MMICAD-TM
Optotek and TOUCHSTONE-TM HP/EESOF circuit formats).
NOTE: An evaluation version of PSPICE capable of running FAISYN
filter circuits is available at very low cost from Microsim Corp.
1.1 INSTALLATION:
Under DOS
The best approach is to save the all the files contained in
FAISYN20.ZIP in a directory labeled FAISYN. Then type FAISYN at
the command prompt as in the examples that follow.
Example:
c:\FAISYN>FAISYN
OR
C:\>FAISYN --> Assuming the dir FAISYN is
in your path.
Under Windows
FAISYN works just fine when run as a DOS application under
Windows. Copy all the files from FAISYN20.ZIP into the directory
FAISYN. In Windows, click on File-New to pop up the New
Program Object dialog box. Click Program Item and then OK, this
causes the Program Item Properties dialog box to pop up. Type
"FAISYN" in the Description Box, "c:\faisyn\faisyn.exe" in the
Command Line Box and "c:\faisyn" in the Working Directory box.
Click OK to finish.
Alternatively, the program my be started in a window by typing
c:\faisyn\faisyn.pif in the Command Line Box.
You may want to change the font size when running in a window
so you can see the entire menu. This is done while running
FAISYN in the windowed mode and then clicking on the file draw
icon in the upper left corner of the window and the "Fonts"
submenu, etc (much easier than it sounds).
1.2 RUNNING FAISYN FOR THE FIRST TIME:
The best way to get a feel for how the program works is by select-
ing all the default settings as you work your way through the
menus. If you make a mistake, just keep on going, you will
get an opportunity to fix it on the next pass through the design.
FAISYN uses modern filter design theory to compute lumped element
low, high and bandpass filters. All filters are based on
normalized low pass prototypes. The initial design menu will
prompt you for the termination resistances and the filter order.
Subsequent menus will prompt for the filter type, which can be
Butterworth, Chebyshev or user defined (more about that later...),
and will identify design options when available.
A normalized low pass prototype will be displayed based on these
initial design parameters. At this point the user will choose to
transform the circuit into the lowpass, highpass or bandpass
domains. Select "Start a new low pass prototype" at the
appropriate menu to begin a new design.
The "Enter prototype from table" option under the desired response
menu allows users to enter normalized "gn" values from the many
tables available in the literature. This allows the user to
design more specialized responses (Gaussian etc.) without having
to go through the frequency transformation or impedance scaling by
hand.
2.0 REGISTRATION:
There are many enhancements planned for the program, however the
rate at which these will be implemented will depend on the
response from the user community. FAISYN is SHAREWARE and is not
free. The beauty of shareware is that it allows the user to try
the software for a period of time to determine if it is truly
useful before paying for it. Registering the product gives me
motivation to make improvements and allows me to cover some of
the costs involved (software, books & hardware, etc). So try it
for thirty days and let your conscience be your guide!
For those of you without a conscience (just kidding!) I have add-
itional incentive. For five dollars plus the registration fee of
$20.00 you can receive a set of application notes and a free
update to the windows version (in development) of FAISYN.
Note that program updates will be obtained from Bulletin boards,
friends or ShareWare distributors. All registered users will be
notified when these occur and where they can be down loaded.
2.1 "IN THE WORKS":
Among the enhancements being planned are distributed filter
design capability. In fact, the routines for edge coupled
band pass filters have been recently been completed.
Another product FAISYN-MATCH is also "in the works". FAISYN-MATCH
aids in the design of broad band impedance matching networks and
has been used to design state of the art high dynamic range RF
and Microwave amplifiers. These are real world production
designs, both discrete and monolithic. Again, registered users
will be notified when this product is released.
Comments and suggestions for future releases are welcome and
greatly appreciated.

the protection afforded the licensed software by the copyright
laws, and you agree to the terms of the license agreement. If
you continue to use FAISYN past a 30 day evaluation period you
are obligated to purchase a license for its use.
You may use FAISYN on a Local Area Network providing that a
license is obtained for the number of users that may concurrent-
ly use the software. Information on site licenses is available
by calling the author.
A license for the use of FAISYN (DOS version) can be obtained
by sending a $20.00 registration fee to:
