  3. 1.0 INTRODUCTION:
  4.  
  5. FAISYN is a low cost, effective alternative to expensive commer-
  6. cial filter synthesis packages.  The program has been used 
  7. successfully to design countless lumped element filters and 
  8. diplexers from 10's of KHz to 1.5GHz  and is the result of many 
  9. years experience in filter design.  Many designers know that 
  10. filter design is often an iterative process.  In the old days a 
  11. lot of tedious number grinding was required to arrive at an 
  12. optimal solution.  FAISYN eases the burden by allowing the 
  13. designer to quickly synthesize a variety of circuits that can 
  14. be simulated and compared using your favorite circuit simulator 
  15. ( FAISYN currently supports PSPICE-TM Microsim, MMICAD-TM 
  16. Optotek and TOUCHSTONE-TM HP/EESOF circuit formats).

  18. NOTE: An evaluation version of PSPICE capable of running FAISYN 
  19. filter circuits is available at very low cost from Microsim Corp. 
  20.  
  21. 1.1 INSTALLATION:
  22.  Under DOS
  23. The best approach is to save the all the files contained in 
  24. FAISYN20.ZIP in a directory labeled FAISYN. Then type FAISYN at 
  25. the command prompt as in the examples that follow.
  26.  
  27. Example:     
  28.         c:\FAISYN>FAISYN
  29. OR
  30.         C:\>FAISYN      --> Assuming the dir FAISYN is 
  31.                     in your path.
  32.  
  33.  Under Windows
  34. FAISYN works just fine when run as a DOS application under 
  35. Windows.  Copy all the files from FAISYN20.ZIP into the directory 
  36. FAISYN.  In Windows, click on File-New to pop up the New 
  37. Program Object dialog box.  Click Program Item and then OK, this 
  38. causes the Program Item Properties dialog box to pop up.  Type 
  39. "FAISYN" in the Description Box, "c:\faisyn\faisyn.exe" in the 
  40. Command Line Box and "c:\faisyn" in the Working Directory box. 
  41. Click OK to finish.  
  42.  
  43. Alternatively, the program my be started in a window by typing 
  44. c:\faisyn\faisyn.pif in the Command Line Box.  
  45.  
  46. You may want to change the font size when running in a window 
  47. so you can see the entire menu.  This is done while running 
  48. FAISYN in the windowed mode and then clicking on the file draw 
  49. icon in the upper left corner of the window and the "Fonts" 
  50. submenu, etc (much easier than it sounds).
  51.  
  52. 1.2 RUNNING FAISYN FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  53.  
  54. The best way to get a feel for how the program works is by select-
  55. ing all the default settings as you work your way through the 
  56. menus.  If you make a mistake, just keep on going, you will 
  57. get an opportunity to fix it on the next pass through the design. 
  58.  
  59. FAISYN uses modern filter design theory to compute lumped element 
  60. low, high and bandpass filters.  All filters are based on 
  61. normalized low pass prototypes. The initial design menu will 
  62. prompt you for the termination resistances and the filter order.  
  63. Subsequent menus will prompt for the filter type, which can be 
  64. Butterworth, Chebyshev or user defined (more about that later...),
  65. and will identify design options when available.  
  66.  
  67. A normalized low pass prototype will be displayed based on these 
  68. initial design parameters. At this point the user will choose to 
  69. transform the circuit into the lowpass, highpass or bandpass 
  70. domains.  Select "Start a new low pass prototype" at the 
  71. appropriate menu to begin a new design.
  72.  
  73. The "Enter prototype from table" option under the desired response
  74. menu allows users to enter normalized "gn" values from the many 
  75. tables available in the literature.  This allows the user to 
  76. design more specialized responses (Gaussian etc.) without having 
  77. to go through the frequency transformation or impedance scaling by
  78. hand.
  79.  
  80. 2.0 REGISTRATION:
  81.  
  82. There are many enhancements planned for the program, however the 
  83. rate at which these will be implemented will depend on the 
  84. response from the user community.  FAISYN is SHAREWARE and is not
  85. free.  The beauty of shareware is that it allows the user to try 
  86. the software for a period of time to determine if it is truly 
  87. useful before paying for it.  Registering the product gives me
  88. motivation to make improvements and allows me to cover some of
  89. the costs involved (software, books & hardware, etc).  So try it 
  90. for thirty days and let your conscience be your guide!  
  91.  
  92. For those of you without a conscience (just kidding!) I have add-
  93. itional incentive.  For five dollars plus the registration fee of 
  94. $20.00 you can receive a set of application notes and a free 
  95. update to the windows version (in development) of FAISYN.

  97. Note that program updates will be obtained from Bulletin boards, 
  98. friends or ShareWare distributors.  All registered users will be 
  99. notified when these occur and where they can be down loaded.

  103. 2.1 "IN THE WORKS":
  104.  
  105. Among the enhancements being planned are distributed filter 
  106. design capability.  In fact, the routines for edge coupled 
  107. band pass filters have been recently  been completed.  
  108.  
  109. Another product FAISYN-MATCH is also "in the works". FAISYN-MATCH 
  110. aids in the design of broad band impedance matching networks and 
  111. has been used to design state of the art high dynamic range RF 
  112. and Microwave amplifiers. These are real world production 
  113. designs, both discrete and monolithic. Again, registered users 
  114. will be notified when this product is released.

  131. The use of FAISYN is subject to the following terms and condi-
  132. tions.
  133.  
  134. FAISYN is copyrighted material. It is protected by the copy-
  135. right laws of the United States. You may not make any changes
  136. or modifications to FAISYN. You may not decompile, disassemble
  137. or otherwise reverse engineer the software in any way.
  138.  
  139. You may use FAISYN on a trial basis provided you do not violate
  140. the protection afforded the licensed software by the copyright
  141. laws, and you agree to the terms of the license agreement. If 
  142. you continue to use FAISYN past a 30 day evaluation period you
  143. are obligated to purchase a license for its use.
  144.  
  145. You may use FAISYN on a Local Area Network providing that a 
  146. license is obtained for the number of users that may concurrent-
  147. ly use the software.  Information on site licenses is available
  148. by calling the author.
  149.  
  150. A license for the use of FAISYN (DOS version) can be obtained 
  151. by sending a $20.00 registration fee to:

  162. The license fee paid for FAISYN is a one time fee.  Licensed 
  163. users may obtain and use future revisions of FAISYN (DOS 
  164. Versions only) by Carriage House Engineering without re-
  165. registration.  For a registration fee of $25.00 the user 
  166. will receive a set of filter application notes and a free 
  167. update to FAISYN (Windows version) when it becomes available.

  174. Title to the licensed software is NOT transferred to the end 
  175. user.  The end user is granted an exclusive license to use the
  176. software on one computer or computer work station at any given 
  177. time.

  179. 4.0                     Limited Warranty
  180.             ----------------

  182. Carriage House Engineering does not warrant that the licensed 
  183. software will meet your requirements or that the operation of 
  184. the software will be uninterrupted or error free.  The warranty
  185. does not cover any media or documentation which has been 
  186. subjected to damage or abuse by you or others. The software 
  187. warranty does not cover any copy  of the licensed software which
  188. has been altered or changed in any way.

  190. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES INCLUDING ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANT-
  191. ABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE LIMITED TO THE
  192. TERM OF THE EXPRESS WARRANTIES. Some States do not allow limit-
  193. ations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above 
  194. limitation may not apply to you.

  196. The warranties set forth above are in lieu of any and all other
  197. express or implied warranties, whether oral, written, or implied,
  198. and the remedies set forth above are the sole and exclusive 
  199. remedies.

  201. Carriage House Engineering is not responsible for any problems 
  202. or damage caused by the licensed software that may result from 
  203. using the licensed software. This includes, but is not limited 
  204. to, computer hardware, computer software, operating systems, 
  205. and any computer or computing accessories. End user agrees to 
  206. hold Carriage House Engineering harmless for any problems 
  207. arising from the use of the software.

  209. Carriage House Engineering SHALL NOT IN ANY CASE BE LIABLE FOR 
  210. ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT OR OTHER SIMI-
  211. LAR DAMAGES ARISING FROM ANY BREACH OF THESE WARRANTIES EVEN IF 
  212. Carriage House Engineering OR ITS AGENTS OR DISTRIBUTORS HAVE 
  213. BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.  Some states 
  214. do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or con-
  215. sequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may 
  216. not apply to you.

  218. In no case shall Carriage House Engineering's liability exceed 
  219. the license fees paid for the right to use the licensed software.

  222. 5.0                     FAISYN Distribution

  226. You are granted a limited license to copy FAISYN only for the 
  227. trial use of others subject to the terms of this software 
  228. license agreement described herein, and the conditions 
  229. described below are met:
  230.  
  231. FAISYN MUST be copied in an unmodified form and MUST contain 
  232. the following files:
  233.             FAISYN.exe
  234.             FAISYN.txt
  235.             Order.frm
  236.  
  237. No fee, charge or other compensation may be accepted or 
  238. requested by anyone without the express written permission
  239. of Carriage House Engineering.
  240.  
  241. Public Domain Disk Vendors may not charge a fee for FAISYN 
  242. itself. However you may include FAISYN on a diskette for which
  243. you charge a nominal distribution fee. The purchaser of said
  244. diskette must be informed in advance that the fee paid to 
  245. acquire the diskette does NOT relieve said purchaser from 
  246. paying the Registration Fee for FAISYN if said purchaser uses
  247. FAISYN.
  248.  
  249. Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (Sysops) may 
  250. post FAISYN for downloading by their users without written 
  251. permission only as long as the above conditions are met.  A
  252. fee may be charged for access to the bbs as long as no specific
  253. fee is charged for downloading FAISYN files without first 
  254. obtaining express written permission from Carriage House 
  255. Engineering to charge such a fee.
  256.  
  257. Distributors of public domain and user supported software, 
  258. such as disk vending services, may not charge a fee for FAISYN
  259. itself. However you may include FAISYN on a diskette for which
  260. you charge a nominal distribution fee. The purchaser of said 
  261. diskette must be informed in advance that the fee paid to 
  262. acquire the diskette does NOT relieve said purchaser from 
  263. paying the Registration Fee for FAISYN.

  265. The above constitutes the license agreement for FAISYN.  It 
  266. supersedes any and all previous license agreements.
